How to Clean a Granite Sink
Even though granite composite is an extremely tough and durable material, regular cleaning will extend the life of a kitchen sink even further. This goes especially for cleaning a black granite sink. This article will look at some of the easiest ways of cleaning granite surfaces. There are a few simple rules that we’re going to wrap up in 6 useful tips.
Standard dishwashing liquid or mild soap
This is nothing new. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. Start with the usual dish-washing liquid. Every-day wipe will prevent creation of sediment on the sink walls and in corners. Additionally, you can treat the sink with a polish once a week, spraying it directly on the granite surface, then wait for few minutes and gently rub it with non-abrasive sponge. Clean any hard-accessible angles with a soft toothbrush.
Baking soda and vinegar
Is there anything at all you cannot clean with vinegar and soda? Just like with many other chores – using this natural combination will be great for black granite sinks. Start by preparing the paste agent in 2:1 proportion (mix one glass of soda with half a glass of vinegar). Spread the paste on the surface of granite and leave for a minute (don’t leave it too long). Then again, rub with a soft sponge and rinse with clean water and ideally with mineral oil as well. Remember to clean dry the sink afterwards with a soft cloth.
Remember to use soft (side of the) sponge
This one couldn’t be stressed enough. Don’t use anything abrasive on your granite sink be it black, white or any colour. Forget scrubbers, scourers stainless steel or metal sponges and any other type of gross surface cleaning tools. They can interfere with the fine surface structure of the composite that makes your sink look great.
Regular cleaning of your granite sink
This one is common sense. If you want to prevent build-up (it will be harder to remove if unattended for a long time) give the sink a regular casual clean with soap liquid every day and a proper one with soda and vinegar every week. The granite will then last for years unaltered.
Water consideration
Sometimes the amount of minerals in your water can play part in maintenance of your sink. The more minerals it contains the ‘harder’ the water. Soft water normally falls from the sky and in the ground it turns hard as it collects minerals. Hard water is more prone to leaving water stains. The stains are usually in the spot where water stream falls on the sink regularly for a long time especially when the tap is fixed. Make sure you have a tap that can be moved or a pull-out.
Using a water softener may facilitate the cleaning process or prevent issues as well as using filters that rid water of contaminants.
Seal black granite sink with oil
Because granite is a porous material, from time to time it may use seal treatment. And don’t worry. No special or expensive products are necessary for that. Any oil such as canola, sunflower, coconut or any other will be just as good. Don’t use too much of it though. The sink would look greasy.
